PET PAW-TRAITS

Considering commissioning a pet portrait in oil paint? Here’s some information on how to do that.

If you wish to commission a pet portrait, here’s all the information you need, including what you’ll need to furnish me with in order to paint your furry friend.

All of my pet portraits are painted in the finest quality oil paint on 1.5 inch deep gallery wrapped canvas and varnished for archival quality.   The portrait is wrapped around all side i.e. an 8x8 has an 11x11 painted surface ( 8x8 plus the 1.5 on each of the 4 sides).

I take commissions for most pets, the most popular being dogs and cats.

What I need from you:

Up to four pics to choose to paint from.  Not all photos will fit well on to a square canvas which is typically the shape I use.  From the photos I can then see if your chosen size will work well and if not, we can discuss an alternative shape.

I need for the photos to show accurate color of; fur, eyes and nose.  (I learnt my lesson on this one years ago, when I took a commission and didn’t check that this was the case, when it was finished the client then told me “that pic I sent was darker than the dog actually is and  the eye color is wrong” and so therefore it wasn’t really his dog.  We don’t want that to happen!)

The photos should also be clear and not “fuzzy” if you or I have to “zoom” in on the face.  If it’s a pic from far away, or has been magnified and clarity is lost, then I’m just “making it up” and I don’t want that and neither do you!

Once we’ve agreed the photo choice, then we can schedule a delivery date, this date depends on how busy my studio schedule is.  If you need it for a gift or just a specific day, then as much notice as possible is required to avoid disappointment.  There are certain times of the year where I open my “pet portrait window” and it can get busy.  I do often work outside of those times, but during that time I do get busy.  I always announce the opening of those windows in my Newsletter first, so if you want to be the first to know then you can subscribe to my Newsletter at the bottom of this page.
